Habits of Highly Lucky People (And How To Make Them Your Own)

I’m a firm believer that you make your own luck and my belief was confirmed by Darren Rowse of Pro Blogger when I went to his bold talk at INBOUND. The title of his talk was “7 Habits of Lucky Entrepreneurs” and these habits are not only good practice for entrepreneurs, but for marketers of all levels. lucky

Lucky entrepreneurs are avid learners.

Give yourself some extra luck by always being open to learning opportunities. We recently shared some great books[link] for end of summer reading, go read them! Listen to a podcast while you drive to work or while you do the dishes. Most importantly, question everything. Ask “why” about everything. Why you ask? Because someone could be telling you to do something and if the answer to “why” is “because I said so”, walk away. That’s not the learning environment you need to be in if you’re going to make your own luck for yourself or your business.

Lucky entrepreneurs are fascinated by problems.

As a social media storyteller and community manager for many clients and brands, I must admit to being fascinated by the problems that come my way on Facebook and Twitter. It’s almost never okay for a customer to be unhappy (on social or otherwise) so I always try and find the best way to solve their problem without creating a new one. Sometimes that means hoping on the phone or sending a phone number for someone who can help better than me.

Lucky entrepreneurs practice curiosity.

“Curiouser and curiouser”, cried not just Alice, but many of the marketers I know! Looking through the looking glass shouldn’t be the only time we’re curious as adults. This can tie back into being an avid learner. Never drop things without asking why and gaining more information. You never know, sometimes those extra few “whys” are the key to creating a compelling campaign or ad. If you find it hard to be curious, set aside sometime with your coworkers to brainstorm. Bouncing ideas off of each other can help.

Lucky entrepreneurs experiment.

Now that you know your problem, are fascinated by it and curious about the solution get those ideas out of our heads and look for the answers to the “what if” questions. Experiment with new tools. Put yourself out into the world and see if people respond. Is your idea stuck in your head? Start to experiment. You don’t need to create the perfect business or campaign in day one, test it! If you have an idea for a blog series start with the first post and see how it resonates with your audience.

Lucky entrepreneurs watch for sparks.

People of all ages try to stick activity into every second of their lives. In the digital age it’s easier than ever, but if we get too busy, we don’t create. A lot of people don’t get lucky because they don’t have space to get lucky. Ask yourself two questions: what did I do today that gave me energy, and what did I do today that gave other people energy? If the answer is nothing or “I drank an energy drink” you should reevaluate your day. Your next big idea might be a tiny little spark waiting to be noticed and if you have no time to notice it, it will never come to fruition.

Lucky entrepreneurs create, initiate and construct.

Most people don’t spend much time on this, but this is what separates successful entrepreneurs from failures. If you spend too much time on passive tasks you leave no time to be constructive. In lieu of checking your email hourly, take the time to work on a project that needs your attention uninterrupted for a few hours. I turned my computer on airplane mode before I started this post and I finished it in almost half the time estimated because there were no distractions keeping me from creating.

Lucky entrepreneurs are quick to pivot.

Success is rarely achieved from traveling on a straight line. You take a step forward, you take a step back, you might make a U-turn at some point, but the key to success is in the pivots. Small changes made overtime can have a significant affect on your marketing and on your business. Are you doing the same thing today that you did on this day last year? If so you’re in a rut and need to make a quick pivot.
