Target New Customers With Hashtags

If you’re a marketer and have not given hashtags much thought, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, you are missing a major opportunity in reaching consumers. Hashtags are key to not only higher engagement, but also creating greater brand awareness and staying relevant…for free! However, using hashtags isn’t as simple as throwing a pound sign in front of every other word. Brands should be utilizing popular hashtags (when applicable, of course) and, hopefully, creating a few innovative ones of their own as well. Read on for some easy ways to make the most of hashtags in your current social marketing strategy. Do Your Hashtag Homework! If you’re like many marketers, you might not know where to begin with hashtags. Luckily, RiteTag was created for people just like you! Use Your Industry’s Hashtags (even if they’re basic)! Hashtags are an incredibly easy way to target certain audiences. Whether you’re targeting a wide audience with a broad term such as #fashion or something more specific like #sneakers, you can seek exactly the types of people you were hoping to attract. There’s also a good chance your competitors are using these same hashtags, meaning you should be too. While some of these tags may seem basic at best, when used properly they can handle most of the heavy lifting needed to get your post in front of the right people! Create a Branded Hashtag with a Purpose There are no rules when it comes to creating your own hashtag, but that doesn’t mean all branded tags are equal! Branded hashtags such as #ShareaCoke from Coca Cola and #LetsDoLunch from Dominos have become iconic and rightly so. These tags don’t just get a brand trending, they also provide users with an action. These hashtags encourage users who haven’t completed the action to do so and ones who have to share it with the world. The other upside to utilizing a branded hashtag is that it will grant your audience the opportunity to engage with your brand’s other content across the platform. Jump on the Hashtag Bandwagon Before It Leaves the Station Like everything on social, hashtags come and go in the blink of an eye. What’s “in” one day will (probably) be out the next, but that shouldn’t scare you from participating. These short-lived trends, when utilized properly, can draw high numbers of engagement and interest. These can take the form of a popular tv series (don’t even get us started on all the #GOT posts from this spring) or something more obscure like the #yannyorlaurel debate which nearly divided the internet for a week. If the thought of staying up to date on every wacky internet trend intimidates you, fear not, there’s a tool for that too! However, when using these hashtags, timing is everything. Don’t use a hashtag that was trending a month ago as it won’t help your post and, even worse, could leave you looking behind the times. Check Your Platform’s Favorite Hashtags While there is often a lot of crossover between platforms, just because something is working on Instagram doesn’t mean it will work well on Twitter. Check to make sure each hashtag you plan to use is performing well on the platform of your choice. It’s also important to keep in mind the content you are posting to each social media page. For example, #ootd (outfit of the day) is much more sought after on Instagram’s image-focused platform whereas Twitter trends tend to be more news or information focused. Mind Your Numbers While Twitter allows for up to 280 characters and Instagram allows you to use up to 30 hashtags, that doesn’t mean you should be using them all. Posts with tag after tag can look like spam and take away the reader’s engagement with your content. For best results, use 1-2 tags on Twitter and a few more on Instagram (fun fact; put all of your Instagram tags in the first comment on your post to hide them). Again, focus on the quality of your hashtags instead of the quantity and you may be surprised by how well your posts perform! #yourewelcome
